How to Care for Your Scleral Lenses: Daily Cleaning and Storage

Well-cared-for scleral lenses stay comfortable, provide crisp vision, and protect your eye health. The routine is simple once it's a habit. Here's how to keep your lenses in top shape. (Follow your doctor's specific instructions, which always take priority.)

Every time you handle your lenses

  • Wash and dry your hands with a lint-free towel first — clean hands are your best defense against infection.
  • Work over a clean surface so a dropped lens is protected.

After removing your lenses each day

  1. Clean the lens by rubbing it gently with an approved RGP cleaner to remove protein and debris.
  2. Rinse with an appropriate solution (never tap water).
  3. Disinfect and store in fresh solution in a clean case — never top off old solution.

Care for your case, too

Rinse your lens case, let it air-dry, and replace it regularly (about every three months). A neglected case is a common source of contamination.

Filling for wear

Only ever fill the lens with preservative-free saline right before you apply it. Don't pre-fill and let it sit.

Handling the lenses safely

  • Use your plungers/applicators as trained, and keep them clean.
  • Inspect each lens for chips, cracks, or heavy deposits before wearing.
  • Keep fingernails from scratching the lens surface.

Signs something's wrong

If a lens becomes cloudy, uncomfortable, or your eye is red or irritated, stop and troubleshoot — and call us if it doesn't resolve. Pain or sudden vision changes always warrant a prompt check.

Don't skip follow-ups

Even with perfect home care, periodic professional check-ups keep your eyes healthy and your lenses performing. We monitor the fit and your ocular surface over time.
