Why Are My Scleral Lenses Red or Irritating My Eyes?

Scleral lenses are known for comfort, so redness or irritation is a sign something isn't quite right — and usually something fixable. Here are the common causes and what to do. (If you have pain, significant redness, or vision changes, contact your eye doctor promptly; this is general guidance, not a substitute for care.)

Common causes of redness or irritation

A fit issue. If the lens edge presses too tightly on the sclera or the lens vaults too much or too little, it can cause redness. This is common early on and is exactly what fitting adjustments solve.

The wrong solution. Using preserved saline (instead of preservative-free) inside the lens, or a solution your eyes react to, can irritate the surface. Always use products your doctor recommends.

Trapped debris. A speck of dust or an eyelash under the lens during insertion can irritate the eye. Rinsing and reinserting with clean hands and fresh saline usually helps.

Deposits or an unclean lens. Buildup on the lens can cause irritation over time. Consistent cleaning matters.

Over-wear. Wearing the lenses longer than recommended, especially early in adaptation, can leave eyes red and tired.

Dryness or allergies. Environmental dryness or seasonal allergies (very relevant in Memphis) can add to irritation independent of the lens.

What you can do

  • Remove the lens, rinse it, and reinsert with fresh preservative-free saline and clean hands.
  • Double-check you're using the correct, approved solutions.
  • Make sure you're not exceeding your recommended wear time.
  • Clean your lenses and case properly every day.

When to call us

Persistent redness, pain, discharge, light sensitivity, or blurred vision are reasons to stop wearing the lens and be seen. These can signal a fit problem that needs adjusting — or, rarely, an infection that needs prompt attention.

Comfort is the expectation

Redness and irritation aren't something to just tolerate with scleral lenses. More often than not, a solution swap or a small fit adjustment fixes it completely.
