Procedures like corneal transplant and RK reshape or replace corneal tissue, often leaving behind uneven curvature, scarring, or graft edges. The eye may see reasonably well in the center and poorly at the edges, or the prescription may shift throughout the day. Standard lenses have nothing smooth to work with.
How scleral lenses help
Because a scleral lens vaults completely over the cornea, it doesn't care how irregular the surface underneath is. It creates a fresh optical surface above the transplant or the RK incisions, and the fluid reservoir cushions and protects the healing or reshaped tissue. Patients frequently regain sharp, stable vision that had seemed permanently lost.
Common post-surgical situations that benefit
- Corneal transplant (PK or DALK): Irregular astigmatism at the graft is common; sclerals bridge it beautifully.
