Your Scleral Lens Fitting Guide: How to Prepare for Your First Appointment

You've booked your first scleral lens appointment — now what? A little preparation helps you get the most out of your visit and speeds you toward comfortable, clear vision. Here's your practical guide.

What to bring

  • Your current glasses and any contact lenses you wear, including previous specialty lenses.
  • A list of your eye conditions and surgeries (keratoconus, transplant, LASIK, RK, dry eye, etc.).
  • A list of medications, since some affect the eyes and tear film.
  • Your insurance and vision plan information, so we can review coverage.
  • A note of your symptoms — when your vision is worst, how dryness affects you, what you've already tried.

What to expect at the visit

Your first appointment usually includes a health evaluation, corneal mapping, and possibly a trial lens. Set aside more time than a routine exam — scleral fittings are thorough by design. If you wear other contacts, ask ahead whether you should leave them out for a period beforehand, since they can temporarily change your corneal shape.

Questions worth asking

  • Am I a good candidate for scleral lenses, and why?
  • How many visits will my fitting likely take?
  • What will the lenses cost, and what does my insurance cover?
  • What's the daily care routine like?
  • What results can I realistically expect for my condition?

Set realistic expectations

Scleral lenses are remarkable, but they're a process. Your first lens may not be perfect — that's normal and expected. Fine-tuning is part of achieving a great final result. Come in curious and patient, and lean on your care team's experience.

Prepare to learn a new routine

Applying a scleral lens is different from a soft lens: you'll fill it with saline and place it on your eye without spilling. It feels awkward at first and becomes second nature quickly. We'll teach you every step.

Have your appointment on the calendar? If not, request your scleral lens consultation at CFE Memphis and we'll guide you from there.
