Scleral Lenses for Corneal Scarring After an Eye Injury

An eye injury can leave more than a memory — it can leave a corneal scar that distorts vision long after the eye has healed. When a scar creates an irregular surface, glasses and soft lenses often can't fix the resulting blur. Scleral lenses frequently can.

How scarring affects vision

The cornea must be smooth and clear to focus light properly. A scar from a scratch, foreign object, infection, or trauma can create both cloudiness and an uneven surface. Even a small scar in the wrong spot can cause significant blur, glare, ghosting, or distortion.

Why glasses and soft lenses struggle

Glasses correct only regular, predictable curves — they can't compensate for an irregular scarred surface. Soft lenses drape over the irregularity and reproduce it. The result is persistent blur no prescription seems to solve.

How scleral lenses restore clarity

A scleral lens vaults over the scarred, irregular cornea and creates a brand-new smooth optical surface. Light passes through the lens and the fluid reservoir instead of the damaged surface, so vision can sharpen dramatically. For many injury patients, sclerals recover clarity that seemed permanently lost.

Comfort and protection, too

Scarred corneas are often sensitive and prone to dryness. Because the lens rests on the sclera and bathes the cornea in saline, it's gentle on delicate tissue while it improves vision.

What sclerals can and can't do

Scleral lenses address the optical problem an irregular scar causes — they smooth the surface light travels through. They don't remove the scar itself. If a scar is dense and central, some cloudiness may remain, and surgical options might be discussed. An evaluation clarifies what's realistic for your eye.

The path forward

Every injury is different, so the first step is a careful exam and corneal mapping. Dr. Salley will assess your scar, your vision, and whether a scleral lens (or, for complex cases, an impression-based design) can help.
